Title Case study: Respondent perspective on survey response

There has been extensive research on factors that affect survey response from the point of view of altering the instrument itself and its administration, and those factors are well understood. Despite this, declining survey response is a continuing challenge. One possible reason for this may be that we are becoming 'over-surveyed' - too many invitations received, leading to declining interest in response. As a way of investigating this, I attempted to collect every survey invitation I received during two months in 2011(excluding any that were delivered due to membership of a panel or as part of my professional work). This case study reports on the variety and the reasons for my own response rate. I recognise that own experience, as a user experience interested in survey methodology - is most unlikely to be typical. So I recruited four people in the UK from a variety of backgrounds to collect every survey invitation they received during August 2012. This case study also reports on their experiences and their response rate, to compare and contrast with my own.
